We are pleased to announce our new Canadian Champion

CH. Shelaskansaranadeshowlingpines  “Sara”

Shelaskan Kennel was est. in 1989 when I purchased my first Alaskan Malamute .  Since then I have been successful in breeding both American and Canadian Champions as well as quality family companions. We are a small kennel located 30 minutes north of Toronto. Please take a moment to visit our pages and get to know us and our extended family better. We would be happy to address any questions or concerns relating to owning one of these magnificent dogs. Our breedings are carefully selected to bring out the best qualities of both parents into our puppies. We breed for quality NOT quantity.  Our main concern is for the health and welfare of both parents and offspring. Therefore genetic screening is done on both parents before entering into any breeding program. ” SEE PUPPY INFORMATION” We ask that you  visit our “INFORMATION “  page where  you will find additional information to find out if an Alaskan Malamute would be the best suited dog for your lifestyle and family. Malamutes are independent thinkers and can be very challenging at times; therefore they may not be the best choice as a first time dog, especially for someone who has not had to deal with a large dominant breed. They are talkers and howlers, like to dig as far as they can, shed a ton of hair through out the house, and will try to rule the roost if given the slightest chance.  Each malamute has its own individual personality. A responsible experienced breeder will be able to help to determine if a Malamute is the right dog for you and if so which puppy would be best suited for you and your lifestyle. Most reputable breeders will not allow you to pick your puppy., they will work with you to place the puppy that is most suitable for your lifestyle and family.

BUYER BEWARE: Contrary to some local advertisements. RED malamutes and WHITE Malamutes are not RARE!! These colour genes are in our breed standard. There is no such thing as GIANT MALAMUTES, these are malamutes that are bred oversize and usually come with oversize health problems. WOOLIES or LONG COATED malamutes are incorrect coat gene, although they make wonderful and loving family pets they should not be used for breeding purposes.

There is a kennel operating in South Western Ontario, that has produced their 4th litter since the beginning of March 2010, claiming to be breeding the RARE reds and whites. The kennel is breeding young bitches and doing back to back breedings. Charging outrageous fee’s with no certifications being done on the parents. Nor do the sire’s or dam’s of these breedings have Championships (Working or Conformation)  or of any kind. They claim they do wellness test which DO NOT substitute for proper certifications.

Beware of Kennels that breed more than a couple of litters in a year (can you say Puppy Mill??). If someone is advertising 3 or more litters every year …consider asking the question of WHY? (can you say Puppy Mill??) In the dog world, there are those kennels that are known as “producers” and those who are known as “quality dog breeders”. If someone is producing  multiple litters year after year, question their motives… A reputable breeder is an active member of their local and/or National breed club, such as the Alaskan Malamute Club of Canada or the Alaskan Malamute Club in their respective country. In order to become members of a National Breed club it is required to have a sponsor and a kennel check before being accepted for membership.  Membership in clubs demonstrates a desire for knowledge of issues regarding the breed. The Canadian Kennel Club is used for registration purposes only and is open to anyone that wishes to register puppies. Ask to see copies of CHD (chondrodysplasia), OVC (Ontario Veterinary College – Hips), and CERF (Canine Eye Registration Foundation – Eyes) health clearance certificates on the parents, these genetic conditions could be passed on to their offspring. A reputable breeder will be proud to provide them for you. If the breeder makes excuses or says their dogs never had any problems so they don’t bother checking, lo0k elsewhere for a puppy, it will save you a lot of heartache.
